Receiving payments

Hello.

Well I have a question. I am helping a friend put his qb in order since he hadn't even reconciled from 2006. He has rental property income
that were entered as deposits and not payments received. Is that really a big deal? Should I start with 2007 and go back to enter everything right, or should I start fresh with 2008? Whoever he had working on his QB did not know what they were doing, and I know just enough to know I am doing it right but I am looking for all your professional opinions.
