KB ID#: 1000268
DO I REALLY NEED TO UNINSTALL & REINSTALL AS PER THESE INSTRUCTIONS? - THANKS
What is happening:
I am receiving one or both of the following errors when I install a QuickBooks update:
Error 1603: The update installer has encountered an internal error and/or Unable to Apply Patch
Why is this happening: This error may occur due to the presence of a corrupt Microsoft Windows Installer file on the computer you're trying to update the install onĀ or because you're trying to install a damaged update file.
How to fix the problem:
You must uninstall QuickBooks and then reinstall the program to a different folder.
To resolve this issue, please follow these steps to uninstall QuickBooks and reinstall it to a different folder:
Note: If you encounter the error message "Error 1316: A Network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\windows\Installer\QuickBooks.msi", please read this article.
After QuickBooks has been uninstalled, rename the QuickBooks installation folder:
Right-click the Microsoft Windows Start button and click Explore.
Navigate to the QuickBooks installation folder.
Note: The default installation folder is C:\Program Files\Intuit\.
Right-click the QuickBooks 2006 (or QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions 6.0) folder, and then click Rename.
Rename the folder to QuickBooks Old, and then click Enter.
Insert the QuickBooks installation CD and install QuickBooks normally.
After successfully reinstalling the program, restart your computer.
From the QuickBooks Help menu, click Update QuickBooks.
In the Update QuickBooks window, click Update Now.
Once the update is complete, exit and re-open QuickBooks.
Click Yes when prompted to install the update.
If you receive an error while trying to uninstall or reinstall QuickBooks and cannot complete the process, please follow these steps:
Click the Microsoft Windows Start button and click Control Panel. (You may need to select Settings before seeing the Control Panel option.)
In the Control Panel window, click Add or Remove Programs.
In the Add or Remove Programs window, scroll down the list of Currently installed programs to see if Windows Installer 3.1 is installed on the computer.
If Windows Installer 3.1 is not installed, please visit the Microsoft Help and Support site for instructions on how to download and install this program. Please note that this is a Microsoft product. Intuit cannot provide support for third-party products.
When you have Windows Installer 3. installed on the computer, try uninstalling QuickBooks and installing it to a new folder again.
If Windows Installer 3.1 is already installed on your machine, or if the steps above do not resolve the issue, you may need to download the Microsoft Windows Installer CleanUp Utility from the Microsoft Support site before you can reinstall QuickBooks.
Please see Microsoft Knowledge Base article 290301 to download and read about the Microsoft Installer CleanUp Utility. Please note that this is a Microsoft product. Intuit cannot provide support for third-party products.
Since QuickBooks published such a detailed instructions to correct the error, I would say yes. Before following them, start QB and do a backup just to make sure that Windows does not do something else with it.
