Blip… and it's gone!
Got a snappy new XP (SP2) Dell laptop for my birthday, with some "limited use" QuickBooks pre-installed. Tried installing my QuickBooks Pro 2002 on the machine, and while it is listed when the "Currently Installed Programs" array propagates, when I click on the QB icon, the program opens as far as the "splash screen" for a split second, and then is gone! Have tried to uninstall and start over without success… it simply won't allow me to uninstall the program! What do I need to remove from my registry to be able to start over from scratch? Or is there another solution?

Can you upgrade...or would you prefer to use an accounting program for which you might be able to obtain customer support?

If it's 2006 Simple Start that was pre-loaded, try to uninstall that first, then the 2002.
Also, try opening the 2002 while holding the CTL key down; this launches the program without a company data file open .... if it launches, try to open a sample file. Rox :-)

Please excuse my tardy response… been on that same laptop on a trip, and didn't have this link in my "favorites." Bill, you are making an ironic commentary. yes? When I upgraded to QuickBooks Pro 2002 and performed the install, something hideous occurred (still unknown to me) and I couldn't open my QBP2000 files. Intuit Customer Service forced me to sign up for a $400 year-long service contract before they would help me. I was furious, but was stuck in "no man's land." Never used the damned contract, and 12½ months later when they called to give me a final change to renew, I explained my feelings on the matter, and the solicitor gave me the ol' "Oops, [heh heh] sorry to have bothered you" routine. Aye, Rox, it be the "Simple Start" trial version or whatever, and unfortunately, I didn't uninstall it before trying to install the 2002 QBPro. And now when my "Currently Installed Programs" list propagates, it is QuickBooks Pro 2002 which is listed. And when I attempt to uninstall that, after the Setup Wizard asks for the keycode and I enter it, and try to proceed through the "Express Setup," I get a pop-up Warning: Quote:

Restarting the process from scratch gives me the message that the Uninstall is almost complete, do I want to restart my computer now or later… and then locks up the Uninstall module! What next?

Yes, my comment was meant to be ironic.
I have spent so much wasted, unproductive, aggravating time with QuickBooks Far Eastern "Technical Support" to last a lifetime, and the manufacturer still doesn't get it. There are still design flaws with QB Pro that I spoke of most recently on this listserv, but, with no resolution. YUP, I intended irony. Bill |

If the machine is brand new,
why not run a full recovery on it...if it has none of your data yet, what do you have to lose?
