Question Deactivating Inventory

Running QuickBooks Premier Retail version 2004. When it was first activated, inventory tracking and other inventory related things were activated. The company does not want to track, nor does it utilize inventory related activities at all. How do you "turn off" the inventory related activities and is there a way to mass delete the inventory items entered long ago since they are just taking up room and are not used?

Thanks for any advice.

Frances

If there is any transactional history linked to those items, you cannot delete them.

To turn off inventory activities, go to Edit>Preferences>Purchases and Vendors .... Company tab.

You can also go to the Item List and Edit each Inventory Item and make it Inactive. This way it will no longer appear in the item list when you invoice.
Be sure to talk to your accountant to correct any balance that you are showing in the Inventory account to the actual amount you need to be there if you are going to be tracking it outside of the program. The Inventory count balances can be zeroed out using the Adjust Inventory screens before you inactivate them also. I would use the PURCHASES CGS account for the adjustments and then make a journal entry to record the actual correct Inventory balance when you're finished.

Don't inactivate inventory items that still have balances, it will cause you numerous headaches :-) Make the adjustments to -0- as Joey outlined.
