Smile Church member gave me a wad of receipts

A church member handed me a wad of receipts and said, please put this towards my account as tithe/offering.

This member bought (on her own dime) food to share for breakfast and lunch and now wants the church to add up the receipts and put the total in her account (as tithe) so she can get the tax break from it. She is not asking for reimbursement.

Is this legal? If so, how do I handle it on QB?

Maybe not handled through QB but instead just write her a letter (church letterhead) thanking her for the amt. of food bought??

Thanks for your help!

Legal I have no idea

I would handle it like any other donation you receive, it is income, then you have the expense for food - a wash out on the P&L.

And tell her this will not happen again, donations like this must be submitted when the occasion happens or not at all.

Legally she would present the receipts to her tax preparer and let him or her explain the realities of the tax laws on deductions. And those realities include the fact that gifts to individuals are not deductible contributions. Tell her she is storing up her treasures on earth where moth and rust do not corrupt.

Since the church did not receive anything from the member, no acknowledgement from the church should be issued. Doing so could make the church a party to tax fraud.
