Newbie entry donations-grants

I just started using QuickBooks 2011 and am trying to figure out how to enter simple donations and grants received. Could someone please take me step-by-step through how to do both of these functions? We are a small nonprofit providing lodging to out-of-town patient-families coming to Greater Philadelphia.
