Here is a copy of a letter I have just sent QuickBooks
Dear QuickBooks
RE QUICKBOOKS PAYROLL
Just a quick note to let you know that because of your outrageous Payroll upgrade policy as detailed on your Web site (misspellings and all) I will not be re-subscribing to your payroll service. I quote:
Existing Customers - Renewing Subscriptions
To ensure that all our payroll customers are kept up to date with the latest information and support, we need to advise you that you will need to be using the latest version of QuickBooks when your payroll Anniversery/renewal date arrives.
Unfortunatly you will no longer be able to run Payroll on any other version than QuickBooks 2003.
Why are we doing this ?
The increasing changes and complexity in payroll legislation means that older versions of the software are difficult to support
A host of new features have been released, including SSP & SMP and producing the software to meet Inland Revenue accreditation means older versions cannot be supported.
The increased cost of software development means we can only provide the payroll service to customers of the latest version of QuickBooks
It is not practical to support many versions of the software
I would counter this crass arguments with the following points:
This is just not credible as somebody who has been using the software for about 4 years. The software has barely changed in it is usability. Most of the changes have been tinkering at the edges. All the other payroll providers have been able to effect the changes without trying to rip their clients off.
SSP & SMP have been around for years - I repeat ALL the other payroll providers have been able to effect the changes without trying to rip their clients off.
If payroll software costs so much to develop then charge people who want to use the payroll software. I have three net worked computers but I need payroll on one, I will simply not pay £1,000.00 a year to run payroll for 33 employees.
I don't want support for many versions of the software I just want up to date payroll software.
Come on just be honest - you don't want to support payroll but just feel that you have to be able to say payroll in your marketing blurb to draw in new clients. Why not simply get a dedicated payroll software provider to integrate with QuickBooks. They can look after what they do best and you can look after what you do best.
I don't expect a reply from Intuit as you have never replied to my previous letters and the fact that you have no feedback form on your Website, feedback from your clients is obviously not something you welcome.
Yours faithfully
