When I started QB today (QB Pro 2002 Version R7P), a screen came up asking me for a password.

There was a default user of Admin and I left password blank and clicked on OK , and was able to access QB without entering a password.

However I am totally puzzled. I did not set up any users and this screen did not come up until today.

What worries me a bit is that I opened an attachment on an email (a word document) which was not what I expected and which appears to come from a company which sent me a virus a few months' ago.

Norton is up-to-date and I scanned the document before opening it and Norton did not find a virus. I have also done a full scan with no infection found.

Still I get worried when something new, which I did not instigate, starts happening on the computer.

Any ideas?

Thanks and regards

I have had this happen a few times on my client's PC. He only opens the QB file to look at stuff - he never enters or changes anything (he wouldn't dare!) - but now and again it will ask him for a username and password. Then I bring in his updated file and overwrite his version, and it doesn't ask any more.

I've never been able to pin down why this happens, but I don't think it can be a virus. It started happening months ago, but only quite rarely. Nothing seems to be amiss with the company file.

So I cannot offer you an explanation, but it doesn't seem to do any harm. As you say, it's worrying when applications seem to be making their own decisions!

Thanks for reply. Everything seems to be OK, still cannot understand how I got an email with a subject heading of "information on ADSL" which contained a document in Spanish, which appears to be on telecommunication de-regulations".

I don't speak Spanish but being French and having studied Latin, I can sort of guess.

It's a bit spooky!

That email certainly sounds viral, but I have never known Norton to let me down. Just keep taking the backups (and the headache pills).
