I have both QBPro 99 and QB2001 on my computer. In order to update my tax tables in QBPro 99, I had to uninstall QB2001 so the update patch would install only to QBPro 99 (manual update caused problems.) Now I've re-installed 2001, but it gives me the error message: "This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If problem persists, contact program vendor. QBW32 executed an invalid instruction in module QBONESTEPUPDATE.OCX@0177:02e4300C." whenever I click on Get Updates. I've downloaded the patch from the website, but the install only gets to about 6%, then I get ".RTPatch Error. Old file not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match." I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I've removed IE 6.0, allowing IE 5.5 to be installed with the program, no help. Both QB programs are in different directories. Any ideas?

this is not possible as 99 and 2001 use different formats to update. 99 uses tax table updates where as 2001 uses payroll updates. There is more going on here than just names.
I would suggest doing a search for qbw32.exe and see how many you find. I am thinking you have more than one version of 99 or 2001 installed.
Anyway easiest way to clean up is back up all data files in a safe place and uninstall both version and re-install. Before attempting this if you have more than 2 qbw32.exe files when you do a search than uninstall these also. Then simply reinstall both versions get latest maintenance release for each version. Then tax table for 99 and payroll update for 2001.
good luck
You don't need to uninstall at all. The problem is that the update always goes to the last version that was installed. I use all versions since 5.0 and I wish they would correct this but they never have. Just get your CD and do a re-install over the old one and then get the updates for that version. Then re-install the next version and get those updates. I also keep my data files for each version in separate folders also so the installs don't ever affect them and I don't accidentally open one in the wrong version. I put the Quickbooks programs and the client data folders directly in C drive instead of down in subdirectories under Program Files. It's much faster and easier to locate them that way.
