View Full Version : Household Employer Using Quickbooks

Can anyone help me? I am a handicapped man who bought this software to do payroll for my household employees (caregivers).
What is the correct response to the "type of business" prompt when setting up a new company? "Sole proprietorship" seems to be the only remotely feasible choice, although innaccurate. I Certainly can't be the first household employer to buy this strictly for this purpose. Why isn't "household employer" an option, if that's how I have to file with the IRS? Did I buy the wrong software? Thank you.

So far as QB is concerned it does not care what you select. It has no logic specific to and makes no business decisions based on what type of business you are defining.

The reason it asks is because it will help you with selecting accounts. Based on your use you will probably delete many of them it selects anyway. You will keep all those associated with Payroll and Employees but most of the income expense accounts I would guess you won't use and should delete them.

Payroll is complicated and QB is a great asset for you in this regard. You may find it helpful to get some help from a professional to set it up and guide you through payroll and its associated taxes.

This is a great forum and I find there are members here that help us all on our questions and problems. Don't be timid about asking no matter how trivial the issue may seem to you.

Do you contract the caregivers from a service? If you do and you pay the service for the caregivers then this is different than personally paying each of the caregivers.
