I know that 5 users is plenty for most stores but we are replacing a custom system that already has 6 POS work stations. We would like to run 7 or 8. Surely there is a license or work around that will let us use the Quickbooks POS on more than 5 workstations. HELP! we really don't want to cobble together a custom solution with another vendor (again!).

Doubt if there is a solution unless they bring out a POS version that allows more users. Even in QB, the only way to get more than 5 user is to go enterprise edition, even then you are limited to 10.
Even on the QB POS Product info FAQ, they recommend contacting retailpro if you require more than 5 or multi-location sites.
There are many POS systems that will do ten stations and multi-store. Retail Pro is one, but certainly not the only one. Keystroke is another.
These are both general retail. There are many POS systems for specific retail operations, such as floral, jewelry (one I know of actually adjusts inventory value daily as the price of gold fluctuates), consignment shops, book stores (both UPC and ISBN numbers), etc.
Best place to look for these systems is in the ads at the back of trade publications. The two above have been around for close to 20 years now and have proven track records.
