We have QB 2000 pro with the most recent update (R8p). We're having trouble with payroll updates. We've paid the ransom to subscribe to the service and have what we think is a valid subscriber number. As soon as you select "get payroll update" we get a popup window saying that qbw32.exe has generated errors and is being closed by windows. The only button that works is "cancel" and that causes you to exist quickbooks.

1.) Is there a way to tweak some registry or file to get quickbooks to not even try to download payroll updates? (Or to fool it into thinking that it has downloaded it recently?)

2.) Is there a way to find out more about what the problem is?

3.) Is there a way to manually download whatever it wants?

4.) Or, perhaps, maybe, even a way to fix it??? :)

Couple things to try before we really start tweaking:

1. go to Employess from the top drop down menu select get payroll updates hold the control key and click get updates keep holding down the key.

If that does not work...

2. Create a new company just give it a name is all you need goto the get payroll updates screen and click on the add button and enter your payroll service key number and your Federal EIN number ......click finish and try again to get updates repeating the above method if needed.

This will let us know if it is the program or just a data file problem.

3. Worst case you reinstall QB and get the latest maintenace release and then open your data file and get TT update.

Let me know what happens

We fixed it before seeing your reply. Curious, though: What does holding down 'control' do?

We tried reinstalling and getting the newest updates again. No change.

It turns out that the fix was to clear IE's cache. Don't know why this had any affect... Do you?

Actually your pay employees screen is a IE screen along with all navigator pages so that makes some sense.

Holding the control key and clicking get updates will foce QB to reset the download and redownload the update.

I also am having problems downloading the payroll updates w/ QB Pro 2000. At the latest attempt, I received an error message: "New add-in product is trying to install a menu item as its own descendant into QB. Notify add-in vendor (GOOD ONE!) of this problem in their product." I lost about a year's worth of data which has since been recovered, however, I am unable to "get Payroll Updates", and when I click on any of the Navigator menu items, I get a blank menu box, with the title: "Quickbooks Web Browser." I have been trying to get Intuit on the phone all day, but keep getting disconnected while on hold for the next available tech person.... if you can help, it would be appreciated.

How do I resolve the message I receive when opening QuickBooks: "Your new add-in product is trying to install a menu item as its own descendant into QuickBooks. Please notify the add-in vendor of this problem in their product"?

Possible
Cause: You may receive this message if you start QuickBooks twice. This will happen if you double-click a single-click shortcut or double-click twice on your QuickBooks icon. This message may also occur if you reinstalled QuickBooks, overwriting a newer release of the program in the process.

Answer: To resolve this error message:

In the message window, click OK to close it.
Quit QuickBooks.
Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE on your keyboard to open the Windows Close Program or Task Manager window. (For Windows NT /2000, after pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click Task List to open the Windows Task Manager window, and then click the Processes tab. Click Image Name to sort alphabetically.)
Select Qbw32.exe and click the End Task button (or the End Process button in Windows NT/2000). Repeat this procedure as many times as necessary to completely remove Qbw32.exe from the Task List.
Start QuickBooks. You should not receive the message again.
If the message still occurs, check your release of QuickBooks to see if you have the most current release, and then follow the directions below for your situation:

If you are not on the most current release:

Reinstall QuickBooks to the same directory where it is currently installed, thereby overwriting the current installation.

Insert the QuickBooks CD into your CD-ROM drive.
When the installation begins, choose Reinstall QuickBooks.
When prompted, enter your original Installation Key Code.
Restart your computer.
Open QuickBooks and click OK to remove the message.
Check your release as noted above.
Quit QuickBooks.
Click Yes when you are prompted to install the QuickBooks update.
After the update has finished installing, open QuickBooks. You should not receive the message.
Check your release. See the link above if you are not on the most current release.
If you are on the most current release:

Restart your computer and open QuickBooks.
If you are still receiving the message:

Find the file Postpatch.bat and double-click the file.

-OR -

Reinstall QuickBooks to the same directory where it is currently installed.

Open QuickBooks and click OK to remove the error message.
Check your release as noted above.
Quit QuickBooks.
Click Yes when you are prompted to install the QuickBooks update.
Open QuickBooks.
Check your release. See the link above if you are not on the most current release.
