View Full Version : Where does quickbooks save data files....

I am using QBPro 2007. I want to know where the default area is where quickbooks saves the data files to when I exit the software. Somehow it is saving it to my desk top and I need to get it going back where it belongs. How do I do that?

You can go into Windows Explorer and put the data file where you want. Drag & drop will work.

but what and where is the default file that its supposed to be saved to. The file where quickbooks stores the data when you close the software.

You said it was on your desktop. The file has the extension .qbw. Check for that and the date to make sure it's the file you want. You can always go into Windows Explorer and do a search for all .qbw files to see if there are any others. Search on C drive.

I know that it is saving it to my desktop, thats NOT where Quickbooks generally saves it to when it shuts down. What I'm asking is where is it SUPPOSED to be saved to. And how do I configre QB's to starts putting the data files where their supposed to go?

Here is QB's answer for you....

"If you're not sharing your QuickBooks company file with other users, we recommend you save your company file on the same computer as QuickBooks. You can use the default location—the QuickBooks Company Files folder—or you can select a different location. If you choose to save your company file in a different location you should save it in its own folder. As you use QuickBooks you'll create other files that will be saved to the same location as the company file.

If you use QuickBooks Pro or Premier in multi-user mode, where you save your company file can affect performance.....

Remember, the QB data file is SUPPOSED to be saved where YOU WANT it to be saved...NOT where QB defaults to....which is the QB Company Files Folder...

For instance, I save my Dad's in My Documents\Family\Dad. I save clients in My Documents\Clients\TheirName.

Its how YOU want to organize YOUR computer.

When you want to open a data file, just double click on the data file instead of the QB Program Icon, and it will open that data file...and subsequently save that data file to the same location where it was opened.

Here is an explanation where it stores it at least in 2011 version.


You may need to type out "Documents" after "All Users"
