Hi Everyone,
Enter special transactions has dissapeared from my activities menu. Does anyone know how to get it back. I am using Quickbooks 6.

Steve,

I can't remember special transactions in version 6, what does it do?

Only thing I can think of is to try going to edit-preferences to see if you can re-establish it.

Good luck
Chris

Hi Christopher,
I need to clear some bad debts. I am sure I did it through Special Transacions in the past, thanfully not that often, that's what Help says anyway. I have tried Edit Preferences and cannot find any reference.
Thanks for your reply
Steve

Steve,

Are you also trying to get the VAT back on the bad debts?

Even if you're not the easiest solution is to create a service item called "bad debts" which links through to an expenses account entitle "bad debt charge".

Then create a credit memo against the customer using the appropriate amounts.

This will then clear the bad debt, charge your P&L with the debt and allocate (if relevant) the VAT correctly enabling you to recover this in your next return

Hi Chris,
Thanks for that, not sure what you mean by "links through to expense account" but will give it a try, certainly not the way I did it before. Why does Help talk about Special Transactions.
Thanks Steve

Steve,

When you create any item you need to give it a nominal account for it to post to, e.g. for a product item you sell it probably links to "sales". In Quickbooks 2002 the field you have to complete is "Income Account", there must be an equivalent in V6

However, if you want to write off bad debts using credit notes Set up a "service item" called bad debts. During set up put "Bad debt charge" (an "expense" account, that you have either previously set up or can setup as you create the item) in the Income account field.

This will then post the charge to your trading account.

As regards "Why does Help talk about Special Transactions" I no longer have version 6 so I can't help you there.

Regards,

Chris
