I upgrade from QB2000 to 2001 with a 5 user license. Two PC's work fine. The third keeps giving me a message stating "Your company is open by another user. Ask that user to switch to multi-user mode..."
I uninstalled and reinstalled QB on this machine 3 times. What causes this error? Everyone on the network uses QB in multi-user mode.
Any suggestions?

I just upgraded my OS to XP Pro and only one out of two computers can access the file.
The second keeps giving me the same message stating "Your company is open by another user. Ask that user to switch to multi-user mode..."
Did you ever find a solution?

On XP, be sure to double check that the drive and folders (parent& sub-folders) of the data file is shared. I found it simple to just create a folder on the root level (i.e. C:\QBDATA\) and share that folder with the .QBW file in it. Hope it's some help.

Sounds obvious, but did you verify your data and rebuild if necessary?

I'm having the same problem on a Win2K ws. Just added a new user to the network and this error pops up. I can open a sample data file, I can open the "real" company file if I log into the network as another person, I can open the file if I copy it to the local machine but not if I try to open it on the network. Ideas?
I've deleted this user, including all residual user paths and folders, and recreated from scratch. I've used a series of different machines on the network. We've got about 6 or 7 users that work great but this new one... I've checked on the user permissions issue in win2k, the user is set up as a power user and it still won't work. HELP!!!

Have you checked that everybody is using a different Windows user name and that each installation of QB has a different licence number?
