I have a real tricky problem for you. My boss wants all checks dated the date the clear the bank so he can always have an accuate amount on the books. When I reconcile is when I change the date to match the bank statment. But it has finally caught up with me. On payroll and the year end tax return. I wrote a payroll check on 12-29-06 and of course he did not cash it until 1-5-07. But the wages appeared on the W-2 but when I reconciled the Jan. statement it moved the wages to 07. Any ideas how I can get this to work and keep boss happy?
Thanks,
Wendy

Unfortunately the boss wants to be happy doing things the wrong way. As you have found out the check date, not the cleared date is what's important. Can you explain to him/her that changing dates can have disasterous results. If the boss wants to know what's in the bank perhaps checking the balance online daily will be satisfactory. If you think about it tahat soesn't make much sense since the outstanding checks are not being considered. The bank balance is usually higher than the check register balance because of the outstanding checks.
