Okay... so I did the bad thing and had a physical hard drive crash without having a backup. Since then, I've been able to use low level software to access the data on the drive. I did not have a current backup of QuickBooks. Where is the company data stored without a backup (i.e. *.qbb)? Are there data files I can pull from the dead to replace a new default install of QB? QB HAS to store it somewhere in files or a database before a backup occurrs! That's what I need to find out! :-)

If you can access the QuickBooks program folder, look for the "companyname.QBW" folder. That is the company working data file. When you perform a Backup, the program uses a *.QBB extension instead of the *.QBW , so you are looking for the .QBW file.
You will need to completely reinstall the program and then re-enter the original registration number in the program. Then download the program updates again before you try to Open this data file. It won't open until you are back on the same version and update release as before. (or a newer upgraded version)
