I'm full of questions today!

We want more information by department, and we will use these:

Research & Development
Production
Sales
Service
Administration

To track sales and costs associated with each of these, which would be a better way, Classes or to use Sub Accounts?

Which way do QB's reports utilize better? I think with using sub accounts, my Chart of Accounts will be sooooo long! : (

I think I would use Classes for this.

I agree with Joey. Classes are the way to go in this case. I also believe your comment implies you've figured it out as well:

If you want more info to bolster your decision, here are a couple of articles on my company's Web site. They're a bit dated, but still on-target concerning Accounts vs. Classes:
